NGO Alphabet: Alternative Education

Because I have the right to learn and live in peace Mission

By building educational facilities in Syrian refugee camps, the association “Alphabet – Alternative Education” aims to meet the educational needs created by the Syrian conflict that caused the interruption of the school curriculum for a large number of children.

History Alphabet started in late 2013 at the initiative of young Syrians and Lebanese who brought together a small group of children Syrians around some simple activities in a small camp. For the first educational camp, the prep work lasted four months and resulted in the construction of an educational camp within a week. The costs were completely covered by the generosity of donors, but the cost of maintaining and operating need regular donations sustainable in the medium term. Within months, the network enrolled 700 students in six educational camps in Bekaa, each camp divided in two sections: one for students aged 5 to 9 years and another camp for students aged 10 to 13 years old. Each camp is equipped with means for heating and protecting the children, a display screen and a whiteboard, as well as books, educational games and playing spaces. Professors from the refugee camps supervise the education, after attendin training courses targeted for programs approved by UNICEF.

Objectives Ensure the continuity of the current education camps and initiate the construction of more camps in Lebanon in order to:

  • Delay the entrance of children in the labor market,
  • Reduce the financial burden of each household by providing school material, clothes, food and medicine to children in school.
  • Network with the local community by building relationships of trust and cooperation between employees of “Alphabet – Alternative Education”, teachers and parents, especially mothers.
  • Provide a steady source of income for refugee youth graduates and former teachers, as well as temporary employment opportunities for residents of the camp according to the needs of the school and its surroundings.

Ensure the regular provision of medical services through frequent visits of doctors to monitor the health of children.
